NUP leaders rebuke move to have the LoP elected by MPs

The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu a.k.a Bobi Wine has scoffed at the ruling Government over a move to have Opposition Members of Parliament elect the Leader of Opposition, saying this will not weaken them.

This is after Richard Lumu, the Mityana South MP from the Democratic Party (DP) was granted leave by Parliament that is sitting in Gulu City, to draft a private member’s bill, the Administration of Parliament Bill 2024, that seeks to have the Leader of Opposition elected by all opposition MPs in Parliament instead of being appointed by the leading opposition party in Parliament.

Kyagulanyi while addressing Local Government leaders today at the NUP headquarters at Makerere-Kavule, Kawempe division in Kampala, noted that the move has been orchestrated by President Museveni to ensure all electable positions in Parliament are in his hands.

He says all this is done just because NUP has put much pressure on the ruling Government in every corner, and they are using all avenues to weaken it which will be difficult to achieve.

Kyagulanyi says as a party, they are not ready to entertain any of their members that will be found guilty of colluding with President Museveni on issues affecting the management of the country.

Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi has accused the Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among of being behind this move of having the law changed to have the Leader of Opposition elected amongst and by Opposition MPs.

He however emphasizes that the bill will not stop the Opposition from fighting corruption and warned that the Speaker and those behind this move should remember that they too can find themselves on the opposition side of leadership.

At the same event, the NUP party welcomed three former MPs; Johnson Muyanja Senyonga of Mukono, Iddi Lubyayi Kisiki of Bukomansimbi and Sarah Nakawunde of Mpigi who crossed to NUP from the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party.

David Lewis Rubongoya, the NUP Secretary General reminded the new members to always move by the party’s mission of redeeming the country from the NRM Government instead of fronting their own agenda of winning leadership positions as MPs, Mayors among others.
